Yarm 1914

Alick was born in Hutton Rudby in 1891 to Henry Bainbridge aged 24, a local builder and his wife Susan aged 26. Henry married Susan Bainbridge in 1889 a distant relative, both living in Hutton Rudby. Susan died in 1903 leaving Henry to look after Walter aged 12, Alick aged 11, Berwick aged 10 and Maud aged 8. In 1905 his father married Mary Taylor and by 1911 Walter was a builders clerk, Alick a builder, Berwick a horseman on a farm and Maud assisted Mary on the farm. Mary had given birth to Edger William aged 4, Zelah aned 2 and Frederick had just been born.

Alick signed up in December 1915 and joined the Royal Engineers. His medical indicated he was fit for duty but had poor molars.
He was mobilised on 20 March 1916 and sent to France. He must have returned on several occasions as he married Mary Cosner Seymour from Whorlton on 24 November 1917 and moved into The Holmes, Hutton Rudby. They had their first child, George Berwick, in January 1919. He was also at home between 20 August and 21 August 1916. He was wounded on 29 May 1917 and shot in the foot on 23 March 1918 and was in hospital between 29 March and 11 May 1918 by which time his wound had healed. He left the army on 20 February 1919 to return to his family.

His brother Berwick was shot and died on 14 October 1916 aged 24. Berwick is burried at St Sever [Hospital] Cemetery Extension, Rouen
